Healthy Foods Before Dudes
The main purpose of my project is to teach teenage girls how to eat healthy and the benefits of eating healthy by creating a website including recipes and tips.
For my semester two genius hour project I decided to create a website called Healthy Foods Before Dudes. (H.F.B.D) containing a bunch of information on how to eat healthy and why as teenage girls it is important to eat healthy. My partner and I came up with this Idea while having a discussion about how many girls our age have unhealthy eating habits, including eating disorders. This can be a real problem, especially for teenage girls, in order to focus on school, prevent further health problems and just be happier in general, it is very important to eat healthy.
Our name, “Healthy foods before dudes” doesn't mean that we don’t like dudes, or are leaving them out, anyone can view our website and use our recipes, but the reason why we have that name if because we want our main audience to be teenage girls. We want to remind girls on how important it is to watch what we put in our bodies especially when girls are trying to lose weight some of the measures they take can be extremely dangerous. Many girls have self image problems and are afraid of gaining weight or are wanting to lose weight. When girls have these negative thoughts about their body It can drive them to develop eating disorders, depression and anxiety. Our goal is to teach girls how to love their bodies by watch what they put in them and remind them that everyone is beautiful and they don't need to change by starving themselves.
After we came up with the idea for H.F.B.D we started looking for healthy recipes on pinterest and online. We tried a few of them and took pictures of our progress them we put them on our website if we liked how they turned out. We also added links to where we found them so if people liked the recipes they can go back and browse for more. On our website we also included some information on eating disorders and some tips to stay healthy.
I learned a lot during this genius hour project, It helped me realized how I can change my eating habits and not go on short term diets or limit my food, but start a healthy lifestyle. Since I learned so much I wanted to share I with others so they will also be informed about the benefits of eating healthy. The way that I shared this information was by making a separate weebly page from my genius how weebly page that included recipes and pictures of the food I made.
On my genius hour weebly page I added a link on the resource page to my H.F.B.D website. I really hope that teenage girls will look at my website and learn about eating disorders and how to live healthier lifestyle by watching what you eat. It would really make me happy if this website would help some girls realise what they need to change in their life to make them happier and healthier.
I was really proud on how my genius hour project turned out and how much I learned from it. If I could do anything different to make it better I would spend more time on my website adding more recipes and maybe make brochures to give to girls in my school. The one problem with my genius hour project was it was hard to find for people to read, unless they were looking for it. If I had another month or two to work on It I would make brochures or papers with information and a link to my website to people around the school. I might even make a facebook, instagram or twitter account for H.F.B.D. where I could post daily reminders to stay healthy, ideas and recipes.
I feel like I lacked a little in the part of genius hour in which we are supposed do something for the community because it is hard for the community to see my page. I am still really proud of my work on my website, and I know a handful of people will see it and benefit from it. If you want to check out my H.F.B.D page, you can go to the resource page and click on the link, I will also have another link at the bottom of this page.
Even though I made some mistakes on my genius hour project and there were some things that I wish I could have changed, I was very proud with how I turned out. It took a lot of work to gather all of the information I needed and put on my website, I also made a few recipes and put the pictures I took on my website. I feel like I accomplished a lot in the class time designated for genius hour, I worked on the monthly blog posts and gathering information about healthy eating tips and eating disorders.
What I hope I accomplished overall for my project was teaching teenage girls how to take care of their bodies and prevent eating disorders of all kind. I hope I can prevent younger girls also from creating eating disorders and starting healthy eating habits earlier on. I also hope that people who view my website will learn from it so they can influence their friends the eat healthy.
